Twin Islands

Twin Islands

Oil painting on canvas

39”x29.5” / 100 x 75cm

Twin Islands plays with the idea of individuality and duality.

An island is usually imagined as singular: isolated, self-contained and distinct. Seen from afar, it becomes a place of curiosity and possibility, somewhere onto which we can project our own stories. Here, that familiar idea is disrupted. A second island, a carbon copy of the island in the foreground, appears in the distance, as an echo of the first. The landscape begins to ask a simple but unsettling question: can two places, or two destinations, ever truly be the same? When experiences are shared, are they the same experience?

Distance and perspective are central to the painting. The two forms appear related, yet their separation makes their relationship uncertain. Are we looking at two identical places, one place repeated, or perhaps the same place seen from different positions?

As with much of my work, a more complex idea is deliberately hidden beneath a simple visual language. Soft forms, intense colour and an almost innocent sense of landscape create a world that initially feels calm and welcoming. The serene sky and stillness of the scene slow everything down, leaving space for contemplation.

My paintings often begin in this territory between the familiar and the imagined. They resemble landscapes without belonging to any real geography: fictional places in which colour, distance and form become ways of exploring very human ideas. Twin Islands continues that journey - a seemingly simple world containing a question about identity, uniqueness, experience and our relationship to others.
